About

Fempower

Born out of a desire to inspire, educate, empower and nurture, Fempower is a movement by and for women. Womanhood is a journey. One with harsh lessons and tremendous rewards. Being able to rely on other women makes it so much easier. Sisterhood is a gift, one that we should cherish and share.

Fempower is a blog for women by women. It's purpose is to uplift, empower and create a space whereby young women can express their views openly. Fempower is here to help you in your journey through womanhood. As Simone de Beauvoir says: "One is not born a woman, one becomes one." To womanhood!

I credit much of my 'growing' to the wonderful women I've been blessed with. They have taught me to be strong, to cry, to see the beauty in life. It is my hope that through Fempower I can share some of the lessons I've learned firsthand, and through the experiences of others. It is my way of saying thanks, of continuing the legacy of the countless women on whose backs I proudly stand.

This quote is from the phenomenal Iyanla Vanzant, one of my heroes. Her strength, resilience and honesty gives me the resolve to keep moving despite the many obstacles thrown my way.
“Black girls need to be motivated. It takes the older woman midwives to pull the younger women through. I began to emulate black women living the life I wanted to live.
If I stand tall it's because I stand on the backs of Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Sonia Sanchez, the instruments God used to show me what was possible.
I share the award with every single mother in the projects not knowing where her next meal is coming from. Every young girl who has had her innocence and purity stolen. Women who were told they could not and should not, but said tada! and did it anyway ... Black girls rock because we have no other choice. We have the responsibility to rock our families, communities and the planet, so our grandmothers will know they didn't die in vain.”  Iyanla Vanzant (BET's Black Girls Rock 2010)
